Type D comes from the old British standard BS 546 for 5 A circuits. The UK replaced it with type G, but it survives across South Asia – above all in India – and in parts of Africa and the Middle East. The earth pin at the top is thicker than the other two. Type D and type M share the same layout but differ in size, so in India sockets often combine both, and many hotels add sockets that also take Europlugs.
What it looks like
Three round pins in a triangle: two 5.1 mm pins 19.1 mm apart and a thicker 7.1 mm earth pin above them.
The drawings are schematic – they show the pin layout, not the exact dimensions of the standard.
