Type G (BS 1363) is one of the safest and bulkiest plugs in the world. Every plug contains a replaceable fuse (usually 3 A or 13 A) that protects the cable, and the socket has shutters that open only when the longer earth pin goes in first. The live and neutral pins are partly insulated so you cannot touch live metal while plugging in. Beyond the UK and Ireland it is used in many former British territories – from Cyprus and Malta to the Gulf states, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and East Africa.
What it looks like
Three rectangular pins in a triangle: a vertical 4×8 mm earth pin on top and two horizontal 4×6.35 mm pins 22.2 mm apart below it.
The drawings are schematic – they show the pin layout, not the exact dimensions of the standard.
