Type N is based on the international standard IEC 60906-1, designed in the 1980s as a common plug for the world. Brazil made it compulsory in 2011 (NBR 14136), and South Africa adopted it as SANS 164-2. The sockets are deeply recessed for safety and also accept Europlugs. Brazil uses two sizes: 10 A with 4 mm pins and 20 A with 4.8 mm pins.
What it looks like
Three round pins (4 or 4.8 mm): two 19 mm apart and an earth pin slightly off the line between them.
The drawings are schematic – they show the pin layout, not the exact dimensions of the standard.
A type N plug also fits
Only sockets of its own type – elsewhere you need an adapter.
